Vest saves canine during police shootout with felon

AUBURN -- An early Monday morning shoot-out left a police dog with two dings on his bulletproof vest, but the dog did get his man, police said.

 

Blitz, a three-year veteran of the Auburn department, wasn't hurt after the man he was chasing drew a gun and fired shots at him, according to police spokeswoman Cheryl Price. She said Blitz was wearing his ballistic vest and the preliminary investigation indicated two rounds hit the vest. ``He was checked by a vet and he is doing fine,'' she said.

 

The shoot-out began following a traffic stop about 12:50 a.m. in the 800 block of Auburn Way North near the Fred Meyer store.

Price said the passenger then jumped from the car, pushed the officer and took off running south on Auburn Way North.

The K-9 Unit on duty was also at the scene and Blitz was instructed to go get the fleeing man.

 

As he turned a corner the suspect pulled out a gun and fired back at the dog and toward the officers. The dog's handler then opened fire but didn't hit the man.  After Blitz took hold of the man he was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
